Literacy Council of Western Arkansas - Fort Smith, AR

Position Title: Executive Director Reports To: Board of Directors Employment Type: Full-Time
Overview:
The Literacy Council of Western Arkansas seeks a dynamic and experienced Executive Director to lead the organization in fulfilling its mission of promoting literacy and improving quality of life for adult learners in our community through basic education and personalized instruction. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board Directors to set strategic goals, oversee daily operations, and ensure the effective delivery of programs and services.

Skills Needed:

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Develop and update the organization’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

  • Approve, communicate, and implement plans to achieve organizational goals.

  • Provide regular progress reports on key initiatives to the Board of Directors.

Program Administration

  • Oversee literacy programs and services to align with the organization’s mission.

  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to meet grant performance and reporting requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and best practices.

  • Evaluate and improve existing programs while developing new initiatives.

  • Maintain database of students, volunteers, and community supporters of the Literacy Council of Western Arkansas

Financial Reporting and Budgeting

  • Manage accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, deposits, and payments to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • Oversee financial processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of reports.

  • Work closely with the treasurer and the finance committee to develop and monitor the organization’s annual budget.

Marketing and Public Relations

  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to support organizational goals.

  • Oversee website, social media, and public relations efforts to increase visibility and support recruitment, donations, and advocacy.

Development and Fundraising

  • Build and maintain community networks to secure financial and volunteer support.

  • Plan and execute fundraising events in coordination with staff, volunteers, and the Board.

  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities, submitting proposals and applications.

  • Maintain donor databases, ensuring accurate records and timely communications.

Legal and Compliance

  • Develop and update policies to align with grant requirements and best practices.

  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws and reporting requirements.

  • Keeping student records and confidential documents safely filed

Communications

  • Promote the organization’s mission and values to staff, volunteers, and donors.

  • Engage the public by sharing and advocating for the organization’s mission.

  • Provide the Board with accurate and timely updates, including a monthly Director’s report.

Staffing and Human Resources

  • Recruit, hire, and manage employees and contractors.

  • Maintain accurate job descriptions and administer annual performance reviews.

  • Oversee employee records and ensure compliance with HR policies.

Other Duties

  • Oversee  facilities, office equipment, and IT systems and address maintenance issues to support operations.

  • Represent the organization at community meetings and events.

  • Build partnerships with social service agencies and educational organizations.

  • Support Board committees to achieve strategic objectives.

Experience Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in a relevant field is preferred.

  • Knowledge of adult basic education principles.

  • Proven problem-solving and leadership skills.

  • Strong organizational and coordination abilities.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated fundraising experience.

  • Financial management expertise.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
